Inspection and testing of an installation is important to confirm that no deterioration has taken place since the installation was first installed. Look around your property chances are you cannot see any electrical wiring as it is usually hidden in the plastered walls or under floorboards or in loft areas. Out of sight is out of mind but electrical fires accounted for 7909 of all domestic fires in 2005* - a large proportion of these could be avoided if  householders and businesses gave priority to having their electrical installations checked. If there was a gas or water leak we would do something about it straight away but we cannot see, hear or smell electricity, and only do something if it does not work. See chart below for maximum recommended intervals between inspections.

Domestic Properties

If you have any of the following we would recommend your electrical system is checked by a qualified and competent electrician:

Safety Tips
  • Don't overload adaptors by plugging in too many appliances, it's a serious fire hazard.
  • Use aResidual current device if using equipment outdoors to help prevent electric shock.
  • Check the rating of light fittings and use the correct lamp. Putting in a 100watt lamp instead of a 60watt lamp will cause overheating and damage to the lampholder
  • Industrial/Commercial Properties

ForIndustrial and commercial properties the recommended inspection times are reduced due to more severe operating conditions. It is also a requirement of the Electricity at Work Regulations:1989 that "maintenance should be carried out to prevent danger", regular inspection of the electrical system can highlight potential problems before they happen keeping you on the right side of the law.
